Chapter 14

THE ZOMBIES KEPT ME ENTERTAINED until late evening. I supposed my little “friends” were glad to have me back and had all come to say hi. And they kept on coming, as though I owed them money. I got 303 gray boxes alone from them, and that was with the reduced drop rate. I would have to hope the system would make no more cuts, as this was all sort of disappointing. I was killing more, yet receiving the same as before.

Not good, System. And another thing, I want some normal enemies. Those fucking Uruses weren’t coming out to play, instead sitting at home in Snowtown, so what was I supposed to do? Where could I find a teleport to take me to them? Nowhere.

And the Turgus, or someone like them, had recently been bumped off by my group. So I sat there feeling sorry for myself for a while, until a new target occurred to me. The SAM and the runologist Combat had told me about.

As I understood, the professor knew several people from the dorm, and was trying to use them to effect his release. He was being held as a slave, engraving runes onto various objects and bestowing them with properties, and he wasn’t allowed out. By all accounts he was very headstrong, and if I did rescue him and he wanted to go his own way, he wouldn’t be able to. Well, I could only understand them, practical military types that they were. Why let skilled labor go to waste when you could keep it under lock and key?

I made it to their lair quite quickly and blinked up onto a convenient roof directly opposite the Academy. The building was relatively well-reinforced, although it wouldn’t survive a large wave, and they had lots of people, all armed.

The shots did not die down as they continued shooting zombies without pause. It was obvious they had ammo up the wazoo, and that was a good thing. My only question was, where did they keep all their weapons?

I wrote to Combat: I’m gonna find those academics, and I’m gonna tell them we can take them no sweat if we must. Good plan?

Be careful, Varg. It won’t be so easy if they’re still alive, he replied. How sweet that he was concerned for me. Try to gather as much information as possible. Don’t go looking for trouble.

Unfortunately, the runologist hadn’t been given time to say anything about the group. He’d let something slip during conversation and been silent since then.

An interesting building. Somehow I hadn’t noticed it before. The entrance was adorned with white columns, which were now smeared with blood and soot.

They continued their zombie target practice, opening the doors the second a reward dropped, allowing several people to run out, dressed in new unblemished military uniforms, and quickly gather up the boxes.

Interesting. I waited for the next zombie and blinked to a distance of ten yards from it. An archer wasted no time in shooting it, whereupon
